DEFENDING DAVE SHARP

E-mail Summaries

Sharp tries to locate John Blake and pass information to local police regarding Blake's cyber-stalking activities.

The following is a series of e-mails exchanged among local musician, Bill Mulroney; guitarist, Scott Geshen; and myself (Dave Sharp):

Message # 01: From Dave Sharp to Bill Mulroney, August 9, 2005

Synopsis: Sharp asks about John Blake, but did not know his last name at the time. He only knew Blake as "John." Sharp describes John to Mulroney. Sharp says John may be involved in "serious criminal activities," involving cyber-stalking and sending death threat e-mails. He suspects John is an FBI "snitch," which might make him "difficult to prosecute." Sharp requests John's last name and contact information. He states that he intends to pass the information to the "Montgomery County Police" and let them handle things "rather than attacking [John] personally and getting [himself] thrown in jail." (See e-mail.)

Message # 02: From Bill Mulroney to Dave Sharp, August 9, 2005

Synopsis: Mulroney says he cannot remember John's last name, but recalls seeing him around for years and has talked to him many times. Mulroney says John seemed like a "nice guy." He asks if Sharp is sure he has the right person. Mulroney advises that John has played with Scott Gershen in at least one band in the past. Mulroney also states that John allowed Scott to stay at his apartment when Scott fell on hard times the previous year. (See e-mail.)

Message # 03: From Bill Mulroney to Dave Sharp, August 11, 2005

Synopsis: Mulroney gives Sharp unusual advice, considering he is a lawyer. In a previous e-mail, Sharp advised Mulroney that he wanted to obtain John's full name and contact information so he could pass the information to the police, rather than approaching John himself. Sharp indicated that he and John nearly had a physical altercation, but he (Sharp) wanted to future altercations by getting the police involved. Mulroney essentially threatened Sharp, saying if he complained to the police, he would be banned from Mulroney's future jam sessions which were held at an American Legion Hall in Rockville, Maryland. (See e-mail.)

Message # 04: From Dave Sharp to Scott Geshen, Aug. 13, 2005
Synopsis: Sharp asks Geshen for John Blake's address. Sharp says Blake may be involved in criminal activity, like sending death threat e-mails. (See e-mail.)

Message # 05: From Scott Geshen to Dave Sharp, Aug. 13, 2005
Synopsis: Geshen seems very nervous and quickly distances himself from Blake, say he is "NOT shielding Blake in any way." Geshen says Blake is "eccentric," which is being "polite." Geshen requests more information. (See e-mail.)

Message # 06: From Scott Geshen to Dave Sharp, Aug. 14, 2005
Synopsis: Geshen advises that Blake may uses an alias. He says there may be "no DMV/MVA record for BLAKE," but the police should try "FIELD." Geshen says Blake lives in Germantown, and Geshen "stayed there until he kicked me out." Oddly, Geshen claims he does not "know the house number or the street name." Geshen reiterates that he is not "protecting" Blake, and he is "considering my own safety." (See e-mail.)

Message # 07: From Dave Sharp to Scott Geshen, Aug. 14, 2005
Synopsis: Sharp thanks Geshen for the information; advises him not to worry. Says he thinks Blake is a "he's a flunky for some rough characters." (See e-mail.)

Message # 08: From Scott Geshen to Dave Sharp, Aug. 14, 2005
Synopsis: Geshen describes Blake as loner who is "excessively quirky." Geshen says Blake is a "trip." Says he "has no friends, only acquaintances." (See e-mail.)

Five months later, Gary Garvin destroys band (Luisa and the Reverbs).

The following is a series of e-mails exchanged among guitarist, Scott Geshen, Gary Garvin, Luisa Rose, Andy Conversano (drummer), and myself (Dave Sharp):

Message # 09: From Scott Geshen to Dave Sharp & Gary Garvin, Feb. 3, 2005
CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano
Synopsis: Scott says he will no longer play with the band after last scheduled gig in April 2006. He calls Sharp "a dictator." He forwards a private e-mail from Gary Garvin which was very critical of Sharp for asking them to learn new material (approximately four songs) for recent gig. It is obvious that Mr. Garvin agitated Mr. Geshen and encouraged him to quit. (Note: Sharp delivered recordings and chord charts for the new songs to both Geshen and Garvin several days before the performance in question, so their agitation makes little sense. Per agreement with the band leader, Luisa Rose, the band had agreed to accept a gig where limited country music was a plus. That was the reason for adding the new material. It was not a last minute decision. It was planned and agreed to since the gig was accepted a few months earlier. The other band members were unavailable to rehearse and select additional country songs, so Luisa and Dave had a rehearsal the weekend before the gig and picked several songs to perform. All songs featured Luisa as the lead vocalist. Dave recorded the tunes on CD, made chord charts, and delivered them to Geshen and Garvin several days before the gig.) (See e-mail.)

Message # 10: From Dave Sharp to Gary Garvin & Scott Geshen, Feb. 3, 2005
CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano
Synopsis: Sharp says he is sorry about the death of band friend, Jim Motz (died of cancer a day or so earlier). Sharp advises that people are probably upset about Jim. Then he explains what happened with the songs. He says he simply gave or sent the practice materials to band members and hoped for the best. He didn't pressure anyone. Sharp points out, however, that Garvin refused to accept practice materials after Sharp had worked on them and had them ready within agreed date. Sharp had called Garvin and asked if he could drive over and drop off the rehearsal material, but Garvin said it wasn't necessary because he was busy. So Sharp mailed the materials to Garvin and hoped for the best. Sharp says he doesn't understand where all the attitude is coming from because he did not pressure anyone to learn the songs. In fact, Sharp and Luisa ended up performing some of the tunes alone, with just acoustic guitar and vocals, and it sounded fine. (See e-mail.)

Message # 11: From Gary Garvin to Dave Sharp & Scott Geshen, Feb. 3, 2005

CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano
Synopsis: Garvin says he told Sharp he was busy with busy with his job as a draftsman and would be unable to learn more than a few new songs. (See e-mail.)

Message # 12: From Dave Sharp to Gary Garvin & Scott Geshen, Feb. 3, 2005
CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano
Synopsis: Sharp re-states to Garvin what happened, saying that Gary agreed to the timeframes, then essentially reneged on the agreement. But he says Garvin and Geshen's comments were rude. Sharp says he never demanded that Garvin do anything, and he asked him not to spread that around because it was a lie. Sharp reiterates that he merely gave Garvin practice material, rather than letting it go to waste, and hoped for the best. Sharp makes a joke by asking why Garvin hates country music so much, considering he's a member of the American Legion. (See e-mail.)

Message # 13: From Gary Garvin to Dave Sharp & Scott Geshen, Feb. 3, 2005
CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano
Synopsis: Garvin waxes indignant over Sharp's joke about American Legion members liking country music. He acts as though Sharp has slapped his mother. (See e-mail.)

Messages 14 through 20: Gary Garvin, Scott Geshen, and Andy Conversano quit the band. (See e-mails.)
