Raw e-mails with Gary Garvin

Message # 09: From Scott Geshen to Dave Sharp & Gary Garvin, Feb. 3, 2005

CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano

Synopsis: Scott says he will no longer play with the band after last scheduled gig in April. He forwards private e-mail from Gary Garvin which was very critical of Sharp for asking them to learn new material for recent gig.

A rant and rave e-mail would be good for me emotionally but potentially dangerous physically,so the Reader's Digest version is this: after the April VFW gig I will be known as an ex member of the Reverbs...I wouldn't be surprised if a replacement was found sooner, not necessarily a suitable one, but a replacement nonetheless...Naturally Howard comes to mind...And in the interest of fair and balanced reporting...You are talented Dave, but like the other guys in CCR and John George and Ringo, being in a band with a dictator is (speaking for myself) not worth it.

He still did those songs, anyway, having absolutely no consideration for anyone in the band. And as I said last night, I'd never heard that Krausse song at all, so I was totally blind and not a mind reader. Nor had I ever heard the Ronstadt song.

I TOLD HIM that I didn't know those all week long, and that fool still asked me when I got there if I had learned them to which I said no!

I think we have the March 11th (Olney Tavern), March 17th (St. Pat's) and an April VFW gig ... when he writes with another upcoming gig, I'll just tell him I'm unavailable. I will honor what I'd already promised to do.

Message # 10: From Dave Sharp to Gary Garvin & Scott Geshen, Feb. 3, 2005

CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano

Synopsis: Sharp says he is sorry about the death of band friend, Jim Motz (died of cancer a day or so earlier). Sharp advises that people are probably upset about Jim. Then he explains what happened with the songs. He says he simply gave or sent the practice materials to band members and hoped for the best. He didn't pressure anyone. He said he was concerned that everyone did not have time to learn all songs. Sharp points out, however, that Garvin refused to accept practice materials after Sharp had worked on them and had them ready within agreed date. So Sharp mailed them to Garvin and hoped for the best. Sharp says he doesn't understand where all the attitude is coming from.

Sorry about Jim. I didn't know he was as sick as he
was until Wednesday night. I suspect that's got
everyone more upset than they realize.

Nevertheless, for the record, Gary, I feel like I did
everything you asked. You asked me to get you a song
list by Sunday, which I did. The reason you made the
request, I assume, was because you wanted time to
learn any new songs. I told you several days in
advance that Luisa and I were practicing Saturday to
learn some country songs since that was what we agreed
to play when we first got the gig. I further advised
that I could not get the song list finished until
Luisa and I selected the songs. Anyway, we practiced
on Saturday, I sent everyone a list on Sunday as
promised, and I tried to deliver a CD to you (Gary) on
Sunday evening so you would have three days to learn
the songs. (I delivered a CD to Scott, and he didn't
seem upset about it at that time. On Sunday night,
Scott told me he couldn't wait to play the gig. He
never complained about learning knew songs when we
talked.)

But you (Gary) REFUSED to accept the CD on Sunday. So
I overnighted it to you the next day. And I emailed
you four chord charts in the wee hours of Monday
morning. You (Gary) replied saying they were GREAT
charts. So I assumed the problem was resolved. You had
the CD and GREAT charts. Seriously, I think if you had
spent ONE HOUR working on the songs, you would have
learned them easily. Anyway, at the last minute on
Wednesday evening (the night of the gig), I received a
flurry of emails from you and Scott saying you only
wanted to do four of the original seven songs. I told
Luisa your concerns but she said you guys had plenty
of time to learn the songs, and I had to agree. She
said we could just play the songs alone if you didn't
know them. I told her we she drop one, so we dropped
One of These Days by Emmylou Harris because probably
the most obscure tune we play.

That's what happened. I'm not sure where all the anger
came from. No one asked you to do anything
unreasonable. Don't other people you play with ever
ask you to learn new tunes? If you couldn't play the
songs, then fine. We just played them "unplugged." I
really don't understand where all the attitude came
from.

Anyway, I'm sorry about Jim.

Dave

I'm not going to read any more of the nonsense!

For the RECORD, I told Dave that I didn't have any time during the week and I could only learn a few of them. I had a few rush graphic pieces to do during the days and evenings to meet a deadline. My DAY JOB comes first, I Dave that you that and Dave said he understood. Dave even acknowledged it in an email.

I HAVE A LIFE!

Synopsis: Sharp re-states to Garvin what happened, saying that Gary agreed to the timeframes, then essentially reneged on the agreement. But he says Garvin and Geshin's comments were rude. Then he asks how Garvin can hate country music that much, considering he's a member of the American Legion.

Gary:

You set the deadline of Sunday, which I met. Then you
refused to accept a practice CD that Luisa and I
worked hours preparing, and you knew we worked on it
for hours, but you refused it anyway. You made a
commitment, then you reneged on that commitment. You
set the rules, not me. I just followed them.

You claim to be putting in extra hours at work to meet
a deadline. Did you have to work 20 hours a day? Were
you unable to spend ONE hour with the chord charts and
CD I gave you? That's all it would have taken. Again,
you set the rules, not me. Sunday, remember?

And by the way, I never demanded that you do anything.
If you're telling people that, then you're spreading
lies. I just gave you the practice material, rather
than let it go to waste, and hoped for the best. When
we got to the gig, you said you could not play two of
the songs, so Luisa and I played them ourselves. That
was her choice, and it was a good choice. I wasn't mad
about it and neither was she.

But your rudeness and Scott's rudeness made a lot of
people angry, including me.

Why are you so angry?

Do you really hate country music this much? If so, why
are you a member of the American Legion? Isn't liking
country music a prerequisite? :-)

(That and having a pickled liver :-) )

I'm a member of the American Legion, as well as Fran, because we are both veterans of the armed forces from the 1969-1971. We gave up four years of our lives at a very difficult time in our nation's history.

That was a very LOW BLOW to those who have served our country who are members of the American Legion. You should be ashamed of yourself.

One question, Gary.

Why did you compliment me on the chord chart to
Faithless Love, then come to the gig claiming you
didn't know it?

"Thanks ... got it! Great layout!"

Those are your words, Gary. Is that NONSENSE too?

Dave, you just won't quit, will you.

In fact, I did tell you was a nice layout. And you've proved it by your additional posting below. I never denied that. But it was too difficult a song to learn with the lack of time involved. I did learn four other songs, though ... gee, no credit for that. I had a publishing deadline and was not afforded the luxury of much spare time.

That's all I have to say ... I'm done. Gone. Out of your life.

Reverbs ... he's all yours!

Dave, please don't write here any more.

Didn't they teach you how to be a man in the Navy?

Apparently not.

You have some serious issues with your head. Get help.

The truth shall make you free.

Message # 18: From Scott Geshen to Gary Garvin and Dave Sharp, Feb. 4, 2005

CC'd to Luisa Rose (band leader) & Andy Conversano

Synopsis: Geshen tells Sharp he's quitting the band too, not honoring his outstanding gigs. He strongly encourages drummer, Andy Conversano to do the same thing, otherwise Geshen will lose respect for Conversano.

First of all, before Dave tells everybody I was jumpin for joy at the idea of learning EIGHT new songs (especially when we didn't need to) thank you Luisa, for the most part it's been fun,but
EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY I'M AN EX MEMBER OF THE REVERBS...So tell me Dave how does it feel to be in charge of a duo ? Unless Andy stays,he's free to do that...I still like the guy, just wouldn't respect him quite as much, he's a grown man he can do what he wants...But as for me I WILL NOT BE PLAYING ANY MORE GIGS W/ THE REVERBS...At Luisa's expense unfortunately,I'm gonna side with the redneck asshole Vietnam Veteran, HE'S talented too. By the way, the chest pains came from dealing with YOU, and HOWARD...I think Sharp and Sleeman has a nice ring to it ...

Message # 20: From Dave Sharp to Gary Garvin, Andy Conversano, & Scott Geshen, Feb. 7, 2005

Synopsis: Sharp calls for a truce. He advises that bandleader Luisa Rose is having health issues (she has diabetes) made worse from the stress of the band breakup. Sharp requests that any further e-mails or phone calls from anyone be directed to him (Sharp) instead of Luisa.

Andy, Gary, and Scott:

This is not an angry email, so don't get defensive.

None of you know this but Luisa has diabetes. She
takes three shots of insulin a day. As a result, she
has gotten slightly ill from the stress of last week's
gig and the ensuing emails and phone calls.

Consequently, I request that if anyone wants to vent
their frustrations or just talk, it would be better to
call me for the time being and give Luisa a rest. I
promise I won't get mad regardless of what you say.
Luisa is NOT in the hospital or anything like that.
She just got stressed out and her blood sugar went up
quite a bit. If you want to send her a card, I'm sure
she wouldn't mind. But please don't talk about
band-related things. Just wish her well -- that sort
of thing.

She's pretty amazing when you think of all the
obstacles she has to deal with.

Also, I want to apologize for the email comments I
made about Brian and the military.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not mad at any of you
guys. I'm just disappointed that things turned out the
way they did. We always sounded good on stage, and we
sounded better each time we played. And people were
beginning to notice us. It's a shame to see something
like that end.

Like the song says, "Come on people now, smile on your
brother, everybody get together, try to love one
another right now."

Peace.

Dave Sharp
